How to Ensure the Seal Integrity of Your Product Tubes

Tube testing for plastic tubes is critical for ensuring the quality and integrity of this type of product packaging. This type of burst testing is typically performed to ensure that tube batches are free of defects and can withstand the pressures and stresses they will be subjected to during shipping, handling, and end use by the consumer.

The MSD tube tester is a superior method for testing the seal integrity of empty or filled tubes. It is small and consistent, making it ideal for use on the factory floor and can be easily sited next to your tube filling machine.

The MSD tube tester applies a definable and repeatable test to the tube and seal. This differs from other methods that use compression cylinders to pinch the tube, which are less repeatable. The MSD tube tester also remains consistent with large, small, full or empty tubes, even when filled with aerated products.

This makes it a valuable tool for product manufacturers, machine operators, setters, and QC professionals who need to ensure the quality of their tube-packed products. It can be used to assess, set, or check standards for seal integrity, helping to prevent product contamination, wastage and recalls, which can be very expensive and time-consuming.

The key benefits of choosing the MSD tube tester:

  • Small and consistent design for use on the factory floor
  • Definable and repeatable test
  • Works with large, small, full or empty tubes, even those filled with aerated products
  • Helps to prevent product spoilage and reduces product recalls

How to test for tube integrity

Our tube testing machines offer a simple and effective way to test the integrity of your tubes. To use a machine, simply follow these steps:

  • Insert the tube into the machine through the hinged door at the front.
  • Screw the tube onto the threaded mandrel (a change part to suit your tube).
  • Close the door, and the machine is ready to test.
  • Press the start button to initiate the test cycle.
  • The machine will inflate the tube without shock and apply the set pressure for a set amount of time.
  • The test pressure and time can be set as required before the test, or we can offer a factory-set model with no external adjustment.
  • A pressure gauge with a wiper arm shows the pressure being achieved inside the tube during the test, with the wiper arm recording the highest pressure achieved. This recording arm allows the operator to leave a test unattended.
  • The process can be stopped at any time by pressing the stop button.

We understand that if you are in the process of setting up a new product manufacturing line, it helps to discuss these things in person. We will always make ourselves available to visit your business premises if you need hands-on help or machine training.

MSD single-head tube burst tester

This unit is free-standing, so it requires no additional mounting hardware. It is compact and portable, making it easy to quickly move around the factory floor to test different production lines.

The dimensions of the single-head tube burst tester:

  • Width: 310 mm
  • Depth: 230 mm
  • Height: 390 mm

In addition to the dimensions, here are some other essential specifications of the single-head tube burst tester:

  • Power supply: Compressed air only
  • Air supply pressure: 50 psi
  • Weight: 18 kg

The tube burst tester can test tubes up to 250 mm long and 60 mm in diameter. This makes it suitable for various tubes UK product manufacturers use, including cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical tubes.

The test pressure is adjustable between 10 and 40 psi. This allows the user to test the tubes at the specific pressure required for their application. The test time is also adjustable between 2 and 30 seconds. This allows your team member to test the tubes for the time necessary to ensure their integrity.

What to consider before buying a tube burst tester

The dimensions of the tube burst tester are important to consider when choosing a model for your needs. The unit should be large enough to accommodate the largest tubes you use on your production line, but it should also be small enough to fit in your workspace without causing disruption.

The test pressure and time are also essential to consider. The test pressure should be high enough to burst the tube but not so high that it damages the tube. The test time should be long enough to ensure the tube reaches its maximum burst pressure.
